Activity restrictions after hernia surgery: The activity restrictions after hernia surgery will vary depending on the type of hernia repair procedure performed and the individual's overall health.

In general, most people can expect to have some activity restrictions immediately after surgery and gradually return to normal activities over several weeks.

Typically, patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting, straining, and physical exertion for a period of 4 to 6 weeks after surgery to allow the incision to heal properly and reduce the risk of hernia recurrence.

This may include activities such as carrying heavy bags, pushing or pulling heavy objects and lifting weights.

Patients are often encouraged to walk for short periods several times a day to promote circulation and prevent blood clots.

Gradually increasing the physical activity, such as light aerobic exercises, is often allowed as the incision begins to heal and the patient is feeling better.

Here are some things to avoid after a hernia surgery:

  1. Heavy lifting or strenuous activity: Avoid heavy lifting, pushing or pulling objects for at least 6 weeks after surgery.

  2. Straining: Do not strain while going to the bathroom or during bowel movements, as it can put pressure on your incision.

  3. Bending over: Try to avoid bending over or reaching for objects on the floor.

  4. Tobacco use: Do not smoke or use tobacco products, as they can slow down the healing process.

  5. Spicy foods: Avoid eating spicy or acidic foods, as they can cause abdominal discomfort.

  6. Alcohol consumption: Limit alcohol consumption, as it can lead to dehydration and slow down the healing process.

  7. Swimming or soaking in water: Avoid swimming, hot tubs, or taking long baths for at least 6 weeks after surgery.

It's important to follow your doctor's advice and restrictions after hernia surgery to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.
